Changing Chairs

Hello! With all the press coverage of the No Diet Diet in January came a flurry of new joiners that we'd like to say a big welcome to this month.

There's been a renewed buzz on the forum with you swapping ideas on the small things that lead to a bigger difference - the 'Changing Chairs' discussion being a great example. It's a reminder that simple changes can be a trigger for breaking bigger, ingrained habits and how easy it is to do. If you haven't been to the forum yet why not have a gander this month and see the simple things other people are doing? This is a tale of how one new joiner got going and what happened when she swapped seats….

My spot on the Sofa in front of the TV is too well worn to mention and changing seats seemed quite alien at first but it was also quite liberating. This is where I switch off and watch mindless TV, mindlessly snacking and drinking. With my change of seat the need for TV and what went with it seems to have vanished.

I was feeling low on Thursday and had spent most of the day in bed. I popped downstairs to make a cup of tea. I went into the lounge and without thinking I sat in my old spot, within 5 minutes I was feeling peckish. I am astounded at what a difference a change of chair can make. All those years of yo-yo dieting and all I had to do all along is sit somewhere different. I tell you it was a real Dorothy and Oz moment - just three clicks of the heel and you're home. If you haven't already, I strongly recommend trying it!

So will you be rearranging the furniture this month? Or sitting somewhere different when you breakfast, work, read or talk on the phone…? Time and time again our NDD clients tell us about the huge difference even such small changes can make. That's because they're breaking the chain of events that so often leads to over-eating.

Brightening winter nights – and days

Another new joiner sent a quiver round the forum with her talk of different things to do on these long dark nights, which reminds us that a little creativity is what we need at this time of year. Between you 100 candles have been lit for meditation, a forgotten guitar rediscovered and poems penned. That's as well as getting out there singing, cycling, swimming and painting trees - to name but a few busy-nesses. Jessica from the NDD Team is playing with flowers one evening a week to remind her that she can create a feeling of summer even on the gloomiest of February nights. Karen recommends 'winter sun-bathing'. This entails half an hour outside with a good book when the sun is shining. Of course, you wrap up warm and take a duvet but – despite the funny looks from the neighbours – you get some energising fresh air and a vitamin-D boost (it's not called the sunshine vitamin for nothing. It not only perks us up but improves blood vessel function too. Scientists say that's why coronaries are more common in Scotland). Try to grab half an hour a day outside if you can.

Open Forum with The No Diet Diet Professors

Will you join Professors Pine & Fletcher (Karen and Ben) for a live webchat on Monday 18th February, 7-9pm? Come as you are, we won't know if you're wearing pink pyjamas and fluffy slippers (or where you're sitting!). The more the merrier and anything goes because it's open forum. It's a perfect DSD if you've not tried web-chatting before and, remember, the forum's a valuable part of your membership. Karen and Ben look forward to hearing from you and answering your questions about anything NDD-related.

Keep it flexible and have fun flipping pancakes,
