Profs on speed

If you'd seen a couple of fifty-something psychology professors out in the country at the weekend on roller blades, you could be forgiven for thinking they were bonkers. But a closer look at their grinning faces and healthy frames might have prompted you to think, 'Mmm..maybe there is something in this Do Something Different' malarkey! Whatever mode of personal transport you use for getting around one thing is for certain. If you don't know where you're going in life you can't complain that you don't like where you end up.

Travel through life with a map

How did you get where you are today? Did you devise some cunning plan? Or did you just, er, somehow end up here through a series of random happenings. Will the same be true of the rest of your life? Are you going to wait and see what happens? Perhaps it's already happening.

Here's a thought. It's said that if you drop a live frog into a pot of boiling water it will jump out immediately. But if you put it into cold water and heat it up slowly (don't try this at home) it will allow itself to boil to death.

We tell you this not because we have anything against frogs. It's simply that we all know what we don't want in life. But sometimes, when we're not being aware or paying attention to the temperature of the water, we find the life we didn't want has snuck up on us anyway.

So one thing to do differently this month is to decide what your goals are in life. Know what's important to you. Choose where you want to go. Don't leave things to chance. And don't rely on other people to plan your life for you. Because what they may have in mind for you is...nothing very much. And, as Mark Twain warned us, you'll be more likely to regret the things you didn't do than the things you did.

The power of purpose

When American researchers asked groups of college students whether they had a written list of their goals in life, fewer than 3% did. Yet twenty years later that small handful of planners had achieved more, and were worth more, than all the other 97% put together.

Try writing down your goals. Make sure they are clear, specific and realistic. Then decide on the path towards what you want. You may struggle. You might feel the tug and the pull of the old path calling you back. It’s just your habit-mind. Shake it off by Doing Something Different. Try having a more flexible goal and taking a different path just to see where it leads.

Make sure your goals embody the beliefs, values and passions that really fire you up. Discover what matters to you by listening to your instincts and indulging in some right brain DSD’s. Here are a few for June:

  • Turn up at the cinema and watch the next film that’s starting
  • Get on a bus and go where it takes you
  • Become a volunteer for a new, worthy cause
  • Dress for success wherever you go this week
  • Use the telephone again instead of email

Wherever you go, go with purpose. Hold on to the Do Something Different travel philosophy and your journey will be a happy one.

Bon Voyage!
